For a restaurant in Dumfries, Cavens is just a few miles
to the south of the town and part of a charming Dumfriesshire
country house hotel. The restaurant is run by the chef proprietor, Angus
Fordyce, a highly experienced hotelier with a passion for good food.
Unpretentious, flavoursome dishes are prepared from only the freshest local
produce including award winning local Galloway Belted Cattle beef and Ayrshire
lamb. The menu is therefore
reviewed daily meaning there is an interesting and varied choice of dishes
throughout the year.
As a prime place to eat in Dumfries and Galloway the service is traditional
yet unpretentious service. In a room surrounded by beautiful oil paintings and overlooking
the large front lawn, spacious tables are laid with immaculate white linen,
silver cutlery and fine china.
Cavens has been awarded an AA rosette and three VisitScotland medallions
for the restaurant as well as recognition in the Scotland the Best guide
to Scotland.
The small private wine
cellar is an added gem and, for those interested, Angus would be happy to
show you round. Wines are supplied by some of the UK's top specialist wine
purveyors including Inverarity Vaults.
After dinner, relax and enjoy a liqueur with your coffee and home-made petit
fours in front of one of the log fires.
Dinner is served from 7:00 until 8:30pm. The three course table d' hote
menu including coffee and petit fours costs £30.
Local visitors and residents are also welcome to dine at Cavens. Booking
in advance is advisable.
Special occasions
The intimate restaurant can offer romantic dinners for two. Alternatively
there is a private dining room, The
Green Room for larger parties. Recently refurbished The Green Room is
ideal for a private wedding reception
venue. It is also used as a private
meetings venue for lunches and dinners.
