Golf, Fishing and Shooting in Dumfries and Galloway . . . and much more

Here are some recommendations for things to do during your stay at Cavens. However if you just want to get out for some fresh air and a gentle bike ride to discover the local vicinity you are more than welcome to use our hotel bicycles.

GOLF
There is plenty of choice for the dedicated golfer with 29 golf courses in the region and the internationally renowned Southerness Golf Club just a mile from Cavens. Go to our golfing page for more.

HORSERIDING
For the novice or experienced rider, Barrend Stables offers hacking and tuition for all levels. The stables are just three miles from Cavens and day tracks or hour rides can be arranged through the hotel.

FISHING
If you are an enthusiastic angler you will find the four acre trout lake superb for fly fishing and it is literally on your doorstep - only a 10 minute walk from the front door at Cavens. A one hour lesson followed by a half-day ticket is inclusive of all equipment and starts from just £45.00. SHOOTING
Whether you are an experienced team of guns, requiring a driven day of 200 birds, or a complete novice wishing to have an introduction to the sport with clay pigeons, let us arrange your activity break from start to finish. There is an abundance of shooting to be had locally, from a fully organised day of driven pheasant for six guns, to an informal walked-up rough day with the keeper or perhaps just a day at our local shooting school for instruction or practice with clay-pigeons. A one hour lesson including all equipment costs £60.

Galloway Forest Park
Galloway Forest Park is Britain's largest forest park at three hundred square miles and comprises of seashore, forest, moor land, lochs and mountain tops as well as an outstanding variety of plants and animals. www.forestry.gov.uk/gallowayforestpark

WILDLIFE AND BIRD WATCHING
Mersehead Nature Reserve
Just two miles from Cavens, Mersehead Nature Reserve is set between the beautiful Solway coastline and rolling heather-clad hills and is the perfect place to discover breathtaking scenery and wildlife. www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/m/mersehead

Caerlaverock Centre
About half an hour's drive from Cavens is the Caerlaverock Centre, a 1,400 acre wild nature reserve with hides and observation towers linked by a network of screened approaches and seasonal nature trails. www.wwt.org.uk/visit/caerlaverock

Galloway Kite Trail
The Galloway Kite Trail is an exciting bird watching opportunity to view spectacular red kites around Loch Ken. The trail includes various facilities such as footpaths, viewpoints, information points, CCTV (in summer), release cages and a feeding station with a near by hide. www.gallowaykitetrail.com
